World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, “Cataclysm” is the fastest selling game of all time

With expansion packs which basically add new content to the 2004 World of Warcraft having outsold the years’ highest earning blockbuster movie premiers, December 2010’s Cataclysm has set yet a new record. Serious players this month will spend 20 hours or more, leveling each of their in-game characters and beginning endgame content. Studies of strategy and tactics for each character and its specialization will be conducted by millions of players worldwide.

I have been watching with great interest the subtle differences between hardcore and casual gamers with this new expansion, and from my vantage point it appears the line is purposefully blurring. A very interesting phenomenon!

  1. It is certainly an interesting year in gaming where the first-time-in-a-long-time growth of the gaming industry is attributed to one company and two releases. This particular xpac has such a different feel than the others. More accessible and intuitive, but more difficult. It’s like playing an old NES game.
